Eric Roy, Ph.D.

Founder & Chief Scientist, Hydroviv
Bridging complex environmental chemistry and consumer safety.

Scientific and Entrepreneurial Career

Dr. Roy began his career developing advanced materials and chemical detection systems for the U.S. military and security community. Recognizing the gap in consumer protection during the Flint Water Crisis, he founded Hydroviv, a technology company that built water filters optimized for local water quality data. After appearing on Shark Tank, Hydroviv was acquired by Culligan International in 2021, where he was able to expand his science-forward vision across a larger organization.

Education and Research

Dr. Roy earned his PhD from the University of Maine, where his research focused on metal chemistry and sensor development as part of the NSF IGERT program (Sensor Science, Engineering, and Informatics). At the University of Maine, Dr. Roy also discovered his passion for teaching and science communication as part of the NSF GK-12 program. He holds a degree in Chemistry from Colby College.

Advocacy

A staunch advocate for transparency in water regulation, Dr. Roy has testified before the U.S. House of Representatives on water infrastructure and lead contamination. Through his digital platform, @EricRoyPhD, he translates dense regulatory documents and chemical data into actionable advice for homeowners, journalists, and policymakers.

He resides in Maine, where he spends his free time in Acadia National Park with his dogs Squid & Cricket.
